What is Niemann-Pick
What is Niemann Pick Disease?
Niemann-Pick is a rare group of inherited, lysosomal storage disease. It’s a fatal disease that affects the function of the spleen, liver and brain. It affects the ability to metabolize fats in these organs.
The buildup of fat/cholesterol impedes your child’s cognitive and physical development – the body is unable to remove the cholesterol which restricts the organ from functioning properly.
The severity of the symptoms may vary from individual to individual. Some individuals discover it right from birth, while others in mid childhood years.
Unfortunately, this rare disease can go undetected. A child who was once healthy, may all of a sudden show signs of Niemann Pick symptoms as they grow.
NP Canada is here to shed light on this rare disease. To help families find a diagnosis and treatment.
